Issues: In Indonesia, radio is “undervalued” by the general public. When asked about the media, people often only remember television and newspapers. Still radio stations actually have a far greater coverage and can be heard in almost any places and at any occasions. A recent survey done by Internews showed that radio stations reached 80% of Indonesian population. With approximately 900 radio stations and an average of 187.000 listeners each station, radio should be considered an effective medium to spread AIDS information. Description: Since 1997 The AIDS Media Resource and Training Centre for Journalist in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, has trained 193-radio broadcaster/journalist. The five-days training aims to enhance their knowledge of HIV/AIDS issues, to deconstruct AIDS myths and stereotypes, and foster empathy for PWA. As part of the training, all participants are instructed to produce and broadcast an AIDS programme on their radio station. The best participants (3-5 people) are then invited in 7 days production workshop, to produce 5 features (5-6 minute each) and 5 Public Service Announcement (30-60 second each) to be distributed through the Centres radio network. At present, 150-radio stations are member of the network. Conclusion: Monitoring done by the Centre showed that all the alumni were able to produce effective and accurate AIDS programme. For example, the produced Talk Show with PWAs were able to draw listeners emphatic and positive supports. For every session, radio station received more than 15 direct phone calls.
